One of the most common tasks in Excel is to delete blank (empty) rows or columns. If you are looking for an easier way to delete blank rows or columns, the Kutools for Excel’s Delete Hidden (Visible) Rows & Columns utility can quickly apply the following operations:

Delete blank rows or columns from a range, selected sheets, active sheet or all sheets

Delete hidden rows or columns from a range, selected sheets, active sheet or all sheets

Delete visible rows or columns from a range, selected sheets, active sheet or all sheets


Click Kutools >> Delete >> Delete Hidden (Visible) Rows & Columns. See screenshot:

If you want to delete blank rows or columns from a range, selected sheets, active sheet or all sheets, you can get it done as follows:

1. Apply this utility by clicking Kutools > Delete > Delete Hidden (Visible) Rows & Columns.

2. In the Delete Hidden (Visible) Rows & Columns dialog box, please specify the scope that you want to apply the operation from Look in drop down list. Tip: If you want to delete blank rows or columns from a range, please select In Selected Range option in Look in drop down list. If you want to delete blank rows or columns from other scopes, please select other options, such as In Active Sheet, In Selected Sheets and In All Sheets.

3. Please check Rows under Delete type. Tip: If you want to delete blank columns, please checked Columns.  And select Blank rows from Detailed type. See screenshot:

4. Click OK. All of the blank rows have been deleted from the selected range. See screenshot:


Delete hidden rows or columns from a range, selected sheets, active sheet or all sheets

Supposing there are multiple hidden rows or columns in the workbook that you need to delete them. Normally, you need to unhide them and delete the rows or columns one by one. This is a tedious job for us. But with the option delete hidden rows or columns of Delete Hidden (Visible) Rows & Columns utility, you can quickly delete the hidden rows or columns.

1. Go to the Delete Hidden (Visible) Rows & Columns dialog box, specify the scope that you want to apply the operation from Look in drop down list. (If you choose In Selected Range, you must select a range that you want to use first.)

2. Then check Rows under Delete type. And select Hidden rows from Detailed type. See screenshot:

3. Then click OK, and the hidden rows have been deleted from the selected range. See screenshot:

If you want to delete the hidden columns, please check Columns option from Delete type.


Delete visible rows or columns from a range, selected sheets, active sheet or all sheets

Supposing you have a workbook which contains multiple hidden rows or columns, and now you need to remove the visible rows only. If you delete the contents directly, the hidden rows will be removed together. How do you delete the visible rows only?

1. Go to the Delete Hidden (Visible) Rows & Columns dialog box, specify the scope that you want to apply the operation from Look in drop down list. (If you choose In Selected Range, you must select a range that you want to use first.)

2. Then check Rows under Delete type. And select Visible rows from Detailed type. See screenshot:

3. Then click OK, only the visible rows have been removed from the selected range, and the hidden rows are still kept. See screenshot:

If you want to delete the visible columns only, please check Columns option from Delete type.


Note:

This utility supports Ctrl + Z undo shortcuts.

I found a workaround on a Mac (2017):

1. Edit > Select All (or just the row range you are concerned about)

2. Edit > Find > Go To... > Special

3. [Tick] Visible Cells Only

4. OK

5. Edit > Copy

6. Paste into a new Excel document.



The hidden cells will not be in the new document.

Clunky, but it works.
