How to display grand total at top in pivot table?

As we all know, the grand total row is at the bottom of the pivot table in default, but sometimes, in order to view the grand total quickly and easily, you need to put the grand total row at the top of the pivot table. In Excel, there is no direct way for you to change the position of the grand total, but here, I will talk about an interesting trick for solving this problem.

Display grand total at top in pivot table

To show the grand total row at the top of the pivot table, you need to add a new field to the pivot table and let it act as the grand total, and then display it at the top. Please do with the following operations step by step:

Step1: Create a fake Grand Total field

1. In your source data range, please add a new column among them, and name the column heading as “GT”, and then enter “Grand Total” into this new column, see screenshot:

2. Then refresh your pivot table by right clicking the pivot table and choose Refresh, and the new field has been inserted into the Choose fields to add to report list box, and then drag the new field GT into the Row Labels box, and put it at the top of other row labels, see screenshot:

Tip: Refreshing the pivot table to add the new column, you can also click the pivot table and click Options tab or Analyze tab > Change Data Source > Change Data Source, and to select the new range including the new column you add in step1, now the GT column is added into PivotTable Field List.

3. After dragging the new field to the Row Labels, you will get the Grand Total row at the top of the pivot table.

Step2: Show the amount of the grand total

4. In the step 3, we can only display the Grand Total, but don’t have the amount data. So we need to change the settings to show the amount at the top. Please click any one cell in your pivot table, and then click Design > Subtotals > Show all Subtotals at Top Group, see screenshot:

5. And the amount of the grand total has been displayed as following screenshot shown:

Step 3: Hide the original Grand Total row

After adding the grand total at the top of the pivot table, next, you need to hide the default grand total at the bottom.

6. Click any one cell of the pivot table, and then click Design > Grand Totals > On for Rows Only, see screenshot:

7. And the grand total row at the bottom is hidden at once.

Tried to add both Row and Column grand totals at the top/left and this didn't work with one helper column. It seems a PivotTable Field may only be in a row or a column, not both simultaneously. May try again with two columns in the original data source, something like GT1 and GT2. That should fix it, but I haven't tried it yet.

Any ideas on how to do this with data from an OLAP query? I can't manipulate the database on the back-end, so adding a column is not an option. Thanks.
