How to determine/check if date is a weekend in Excel?

Sometimes, you may need to determine if a date falls on a weekend in order to arrange your personal affairs. With this tutorial, you will learn how to determine or check if a given date is a weekend in Excel.

Determine if date is a weekend with formula

For example, you would like the specified cell to be populated with TRUE if the given date falls on a weekend, and populated with FALSE if the date does not belong to a weekend, the following formula will help you.

1. Select a blank cell for placing the result, enter the below formula into it and press the Enter key.

=IF(WEEKDAY(A2,2)>5,TRUE,FALSE)

2. Drag the Fill Handle to the cells you want to cover with this formula. Then you will get the result as below screenshot shown.

Note: If there are blank cells in the date range, it will be displayed TURE as well.

1. Select the date column in which you want to check if a date is weekend, and then click Kutools Plus > Special Filter > Special Filter.

2. In the Special Filter dialog box, please configure as follows.

2.1) In the Filter rules section, select the Date option;
2.2) Select Weekend from the drop-down list;
2.3) In the Processing of results section, specify a font or background color as you need;
2.4) Click OK. See screenshot:

3. Then a dialog pops up to tell you how many cells meet the criteria, click the OK button.

Then all weekend dates are filtered out and highlighted as the below left screenshot shown. After clearing the filter, you can see these weekend dates are standout among the date list.
