Supposing you have a table as below screenshot shown. And now you know some fruit’s amount in the Column Amount, and you need to backwards vlookup and return the exact fruit name in the Column Fruit. Please follow below steps to get it done.

Enter the formula =VLOOKUP(G2,CHOOSE({1,2},D1:D24,A1:A24),2,0) into a blank cell, and press the Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys at the same time. And then you will get the exact fruit name. See screenshot:

The Excel VLOOKUP function requires the lookup value in the leftmost column, and return values in right columns. Here, this method will introduce the LOOKUP from Right to Left feature of Kutools for Excel to reverse the VLOOKUP order, and look up values from right to left.

For example, you have a fruit table as below screenshot shown. Now you want to find out the trading date of Pear, you can do as follows:

1. Click Kutools > Super LOOKUP > LOOKUP from Right to Left.

2. In the LOOKUP from Right to Left dialog, please do as follows:

(1) In the Lookup values box, please select the range of lookup values;
(2) In the Output Range box, please select the range you will place the returned values;
(3) In the Data Range box, please select the fruit table you will look up values from (Tips: please check the My data has headers option based on your data range);
(4) In the Key column box, please select the column containing the lookup values;
(5) In the Return column box, please select the column containing the returned values.

3. Click the OK button.

Now the trading date of Pear is found out and placed in the output cell.

The Excel VLOOKUP usually look up values from top to bottom, and it will return the first matched value. Now with the LOOKUP from Bottom to Top feature of Kutools for Excel, you can look up values from bottom to up and return the first matched value.

1. Click Kutools > Super LOOKUP > LOOKUP from Bottom to Top to enable the feature.

2. In the LOOKUP from Bottom to Top dialog, please do as follows:

(1) In the Lookup values box, please select the range of lookup values;
(2) In the Output Range box, please select the range you will place the returned values;
(3) In the Data Range box, please select the range you will look up values from (Tips: please check the My data has headers option based on your data range);
(4) In the Key column box, please select the column containing the lookup values;
(5) In the Return column box, please select the column containing the returned values.

3. Click the OK button.

Now it looks up the specified values from the bottom to up in the data range, and returns the first matched value.
