How to prevent lowercase entry in an Excel selection?

As we known, we can prevent other users from editing to protect cells in Excel, but have you ever tried to prevent users from entering lowercase characters into a selection? This case means that you allow users enter numbers, upper case letters, special characters but lower case characters. Here, in can introduce some tricks on solving this job in Excel.

The Data Validation can help you to prevent lowercase entering in a selection.

1. Select a selection that you want to prevent entering lowercase characters, and click Data > Data Validation. See screenshot:

2. And in the Data Validation dialog, under Settings tab, select Custom from the Allow drop down list, and then enter this formula =ISERROR(FIND(UPPER(G1),G1))=FALSE (G1 is the first cell in the selection, please change it as you need) into the Formula box. See screenshot:

3. Then click Error Alert tab, and specify the error alert you want into the Error message box. See screenshot:

4. Click OK. Now when you enter lower case into the selection, there is an alert popped out.

Actually, if you have Kutools for Excel, you can apply its Prevent Typing to quickly specify the rules of entry.

After free installing Kutools for Excel, please do as below:

1. Select cells you want to prevent lowercase entry, and click Kutools > Prevent Typing > Prevent Typing, see screenshot:

2. And in the Prevent Typing dialog, check Prevent type in these chars option, and enter the all lowercase letters separated by commas into the below textbox, and remember to check Case sensitive option. See screenshot:

3. Click Ok, and a dialog pops out to remind you that the utility will remove the Data Validation.

4. Click Yes, and another dialog pops out to remind you the rule of typing.

5. Click OK. Now the selection cannot be inputted lowercase.

Only allow uppercase entry with Kutools for Excel

With Kutools for Excel, you also can only allow certain values entered by Prevent Typing. For instance, you can only allow uppercase entry in a selection.

After free installing Kutools for Excel, please do as below:

1. Select cells you only allow uppercase entry only, and click Kutools > Prevent Typing > Prevent Typing.

2. In the Prevent Typing dialog, check Only allow to type in these chars, and type the upper case letter separated by commas into the below textbox, and check Case sensitive. See screenshot:

3. Click Ok, and there will be two dialogs pops out to remind you something, just click Yes > OK to close them. See screenshot:

Now the when you type other characters which are not the uppercase letter, an alert dialog pops out.
