How to convert decimal hours/minutes to time format in Excel?

In some cases, you may record time as decimal hours or minutes such as this 31.23, how can you convert this decimal hours or decimal minutes to standard time format hh:mm:ss as below screenshot shown. In this article, I introduce some tricks for you to quickly finish this conversion in Excel.

Here are some simple formulas which can help you to quickly convert decimal hours or decimal minutes to hh:mm:ss.

1. Select a blank cell which you want to output the converted result, and enter this formula =A2/24, drag fill handle over the cells you need. See screenshot:

2. Keep the formula cells highlighted, and right click to show context menu and select Format Cells. And in the Format Cells dialog, select Time from the Category list, and choose one time type as you need from right section. See screenshot:

3. Click OK. Now the decimal hours have been converted to time format.

Note: if you want to convert decimal minutes to time format, you can apply this formula =A2/1440, and then format the cells as the time format you want. If you want to convet seconds to time, use this formula =A2/86400. See screenshot:

상기 방법으로 십진수를 시간으로 변경했는데...
31.23 => 변환 했더니 7:13:48 로 나오네요... 31:13:48로 안나오는데...
서식에서도 영문과 같은 예시는 없네요....

Hi, you may need to format the result as 37:30:55. Select the result cell, press Ctrl + 1 to enable the Format Cells dialog, and choose 37:30:55 from the Type in the Time section.

I have the starting time and total hours required, how will i find the ending time in excel.

My way of converting mm:ss to decimal equivalent:
2:42 in any cell e.g. A1 then in Cell A2 Formula =(A1-INT(A1))*24 - hit "enter" & Voila! there's your answer: 2.70

Why do you need to divide the decimal value into 24 (hours) or 1440 (min)?

You cannot format it as time format if you do not divide them.
