How to highlight max and min data points in a chart?
If you have a column chart which you want to highlight the highest or smallest data points with different colors to outstand them as following screenshot shown. How could you identify the highest and smallest values and then highlight the data points in the chart quickly?

To finish this job, you should get the largest and smallest value first, and then create a chart based on them. Please do as this:
1. Type or copy the below formula into a blank cell beside the data:
2. And then, drag the fill handle down to the cells which you want to fill the formula, and the largest and smallest value in the specific column has been displayed, see screenshot:
Note: In the above formula, B2:B10 is the column data that you want to use.
3. Then select the data range including the formula cells, and click Insert > Insert Column or Bar Chart > Clustered Column, see screenshot:
4. And the chart has been inserted, then right click any column bar of the chart, and choose Format Data Series, see screenshot:
5. In the Format Data Series pane, under the Series Options tab, change the Series Overlap to 100%, and the two data series have been overlapped by giving the appearance of the max and min values highlighted, see screenshot:
6. At last, you can do further formatting, such as formatting the highest and the smallest data points with different colors as you need.
Highlight max and min data points in a chart with a powerful feature
If you have Kutools for Excel, with its Color Chart by Value feature, you can color the chart bar with any colors you like based on your values.
Note:To apply this Color Chart by Value, firstly, you should download the Kutools for Excel, and then apply the feature quickly and easily.
After installing Kutools for Excel, please do as this:
1. First, insert a bar or column chart based on your data, and then select the chart, click Kutools > Charts > Chart Tools > Color Chart by Value, see screenshot:
2. In the Fill chart color based on value dialog box, please do the following operations:
- Select Largest(X)values from the Data drop down list, and specify a number into the X text box; (For example, if you enter a number 1, the largest data point will be colored, if you enter a number 2, the largest 2 data points will be colored. )
- Then choose a color you like from the Fill Color drop down.
- At last, click Fill button.
3. To highlight the smallest data point, please do the following operations:
- Select Smallest(X)values from the Data drop down list, and specify a number into the X text box; (For example, if you enter a number 1, the smallest data point will be colored, if you enter a number 2, the smallest 2 data points will be colored. )
- Then choose a color you like from the Fill Color drop down.
- At last, click Fill button.
4. After filling color to the specific data point, close the dialog box.
