Create population pyramid chart in Excel

A population pyramid chart is a specific bar chart which shows the age and gender distribution of a given population, it is used to indicate the current situation of population and the trend in population growth. With the help of the population pyramid chart, you can get the information on degree of population aging, number of people of child-bearing age, future birth and death rates, total future population, etc.

Normally, the vertical axis represents each age group, and the horizontal axis represents the number of the male and female population or the percentage of each age group of different genders in the total population as below screenshot shown. This article will introduce some methods for building a population pyramid chart in Excel workbook.

Create a population pyramid chart with bar chart in Excel

Supposing, you have a population table of a village as below data shown, to create a population pyramid chart, please do as this:

1. First, please convert the female population to negative numbers, enter this formula: =0-C2 into cell D2, and drag the fill handle down to the cells to apply the formula, see screenshot:

2. Then, select the data in column A, column B and column D by pressing Ctrl key, see screenshot:

3. And then, click Insert > Insert Column or Bar Chart > Stacked Bar, see screenshot:

4. And a chart has been inserted immediately as below screenshot shown:

5. Then, right click the vertical axis, and choose Format Axis option from the context menu, see screenshot:

6. In the opened Format Axis pane, under the Axis Options tab, click Labels to expand this section, and then choose Low from the Label Position drop down list, and the vertical axis has been moved to the left side of the chart, see screenshot:

7. Then, right click any one bar in the chart, and choose Format Data Series, see screenshot:

8. In the Format Data Series pane, under the Series Options tab, enter 100% and 0% into the Series Overlap and Gap Width text boxes separately, see screenshot:

9. And now, you can delete the horizontal axis to your need.

10. Then, for making the chart look clear, you can add outline for the bars, right click the orange bar, and then choose Outline, specify a dark orange color, do the same option for the blue bars, see screenshot:

11. And then, you can also add the data labels for the chart, select the chart, and click Chart Elements, check Data Labels option, and the data labels are inserted at once, see screenshot:

12. this step, you should convert the negative data labels to positive numbers, please right click the data label, and then choose Format Data Labels, see screenshot:

13. In the Format Data Labels pane, under Label Options tab, click Number to expand this section, and then select Custom from the Category drop down, and type ###0;###0 into the Format Code text box, then click Add button, see screenshot:

14. And then, you will get the complete population pyramid chart as below screenshot shown:

Create a population pyramid chart with Conditional Formatting in Excel

This section, I will talk about how to create a population pyramid chart in cells by using the Conditional Formatting feature as following screenshot shown:

1. First, select the data of the Male column, and then click Home > Conditional Formatting > New Rule, see screenshot:

2. In the New Formatting Rule dialog box, please do the following operations:

  • Select Format all cells based on their values option in the Select a Rule Type list box;
  • Choose Data Bar from the Format Style drop down list, and then check Show Bar only option;
  • Under the Bar Appearance section, select Solid Fill from the Fill drop down, and specify a color you like under the Color drop down;
  • Select the Right-to-Left option from the Bar Direction drop down list.

3. Then, click OK button to apply the formatting.

4. Go on selecting the data in Female column, and then click Home > Conditional Formatting > New Rule to go to the New Formatting Rule dialog box.

5. In the New Formatting Rule dialog box, please do the following operations:

  • Select Format all cells based on their values option in the Select a Rule Type list box;
  • Choose Data Bar from the Format Style drop down list, and then check Show Bar only option;
  • Under the Bar Appearance section, select Solid Fill from the Fill drop down, and specify another color under the Color drop down;
  • Select the Left-to-Right option from the Bar Direction drop down list.

6. Then, click OK button to close the dialog box, and you will get the following chart in cells:

7. If you want to display the data for the bars, you just need to insert two columns at each side of the Male and Female columns, and paste the original data as below screenshot shown:
