Insert a Degree Symbol in Word on Windows

In this section, we will introduce three methods to insert the degree symbol in Word on Windows.

Method 1: By Using the Symbol Feature on the Ribbon

Using the Symbol feature on the Ribbon is a graphical method that doesn’t require a numeric keypad. It’s perfect for users who prefer navigating through Word’s menu options.

Step 1: Place the cursor where you want to insert the degree symbol

After opening your Word document, click the exact location in your text where the degree symbol should appear.

Step 2: Access the Symbol feature on the ribbon
  1. Go to the Insert tab, and click Symbol.

  2. Select More Symbols from the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Insert the degree symbol

In the Symbol dialog box, under the Symbols tab, please do as follows:

    1. Choose the font you want from the Font drop-down list.
    2. Select Latin-1 Supplement from the Subset drop-down list.
    3. Scroll through the symbols and click the degree sign (°).
      Tip: If you can’t find the degree sign, you can type 00B0 in the Character code box to find it.
    4. Click the Insert button.

Close the dialog. You can see the degree symbol is inserted successfully.

Tip:

After using the degree symbol, it will automatically appear in the Recently Used Symbols list in the Symbol Menu. This means you won't need to open the Symbol dialog box the next time you want to insert a degree symbol.

    Method 2: By Using a Keyboard Shortcut (Alt + 0176)

    Using a keyboard shortcut is a quick and efficient way to insert the degree symbol if you have a numeric keypad on your keyboard.

    Step 1: Place the cursor where you want to insert the degree symbol

    After opening your Word document, click the location in your document where the symbol should be placed.

    Step 2: Insert the degree symbol
      1. Hold down the Alt key on your keyboard.
      2. While holding the Alt key, type 0176 on the numeric keypad.
      3. Release the Alt key. Then the degree symbol (°) should appear.

    Tip: For this method to work, ensure Num Lock is on and use the numerical keypad on the right side of your keyboard instead of the numbers at the top.

    Method 3: By Using the Character Map

    The Character Map is a Windows utility that allows you to select and copy special characters, including the degree symbol.

    Step 1: Open the Character Map

    In the Windows search bar, type "Character Map" and press Enter.

    Step 2: Search for the degree symbol
      1. At the bottom of the Character Map window, select the Advanced view checkbox.
      2. Type degree in the Search for box.
      3. Click Search.

    Step 3: Copy the degree symbol
      1. Click on the degree symbol to highlight it from the list.
      2. Click the Select button.
      3. Then click the Copy button.

    Step 4: Paste the degree symbol in Word to get result

    Go back to your Word document and place the cursor where you want to insert the symbol. Press Ctrl + V to paste the degree symbol. You can see the degree symbol is inserted successfully.

    Insert a Degree Symbol in Word on Mac

    On a Mac, you can use the Advanced Symbol feature to insert the degree symbol. This method is straightforward and doesn’t require any special keyboard keys.

    Step 1: Place the cursor where you want to insert the degree symbol

      1. Keep Symbol selected in the Font drop-down list.
      2. Find and select the degree symbol (°).
      3. Click the Insert button.
