Excel Formula: Add text in middle
Sometimes you need to add the same text in a certain position to a list of string in Excel. For quickly solving this job, there are two formulas provided in Excel.
Formula 1 Combine LEFT function and MID function
Generic formula:
LEFT(txt,n1) & "n_txt" & MID(txt,n2,255) |
Arguments
Txt: the text string that you use. |
N1: the number of characters extracted from left side of the string. |
N2: the position that you want to extract from right side of the string. |
N_txt: the text you want to add. |
How this formula work
Example: to add text “-“ to the forth character in cell B3, please use below formula:
=LEFT(B3,3) & "-" & MID(B3,4,255) |
Press Enter key.
Explanation
LEFT function used to extract characters from left side of the text string. Here the formula LEFT(B3,3) extracts 3 characters from left side of the text string in cell B3.
MID function extracts characters from a specified position of the text string. The formula MID(B3,4,255) extracts 255 characters (the maximum length of the cell is 255 characters) from the forth position of the text string in the cell B3.
Lastly, using “&” to concatenate left side characters, “-“ and right side characters.
Formula 2 REPLACE function
Generic formula:
REPLACE(txt,n,0,"n_txt") |
Arguments
Txt: the text string that you use. |
N: the position that you want to add new text. |
N_txt: the text you want to add. |
How this formula work
Example: to add text “$“ to the fifth character in cell B3, please use below formula:
=REPLACE(B3,5,0,"$") |
Press Enter key.
Explanation
REPLACE function generally used to find and replace text specified by a certain position in a given text string with a new one. But sometimes, when the argument num_char is 0, it can be used to add a new text in the middle. Here the formula =REPLACE(B3,5,0,"$") adds “$” in the fifth position of the text string in cell B3.
