## Excel DEC2BIN Function

### Description

The Excel DEC2BIN function converts a decimal number to a binary number.

### Syntax and arguments

Formula syntax

DEC2BIN(number, [places])

Arguments

 Number: Required, the decimal integer number that needed to be converted to a binary number. If the argument number is a decimal number, it will be truncated to an integer. Places: Optional, the number that specifies the number of characters of the result. If it is greater than the minimum, the binary number will be padded out using leading zeros, such as DEC2BIN(1,5) returns 00001. If it is omitted, DEC2BIN used the minimum number of characters necessary. If the argument number is negative, the places value will be ignored by DEC2BIN function, and returns a 10-character binary number in which the most significant bit is the sign bit, the remaining 9 bits are magnitude bit. If argument places is a decimal number, it will be truncated to an integer.

### Return Value

The DEC2BIN function returns a binary number.

### Error

1. Return #NUM! error if one of below states occurs:

• Argument number is > -512 or < 511;
• Argument places is provided not enough for the argument number, such as DEC2BIN(10,2);
• Argument places is < = 0.

2. Return #VALUE! error if any arguments are non-numeric values.

### Version

Excel 2003 and later

### Usage and Examples

Example: Basic Usage

Decimal numbers and places are listed in range B5:B11, to get the corresponding binary numbers based on the places in C5:C11, please copy or enter the below formula to the next cell of the range:

=DEC2BIN(B5,C5)

Press Enter key and drag the autofill handle down to get all binary numbers.

If you just use the formula once, you also can directly type arguments in the formula:

=DEC2BIN(0,5)
