Author: Zhoumandy Last Modified: 2022-05-30

The ERFC function returns the complementary Error function integrated between a lower limit and infinity.

erfc function 4

=ERFC (x)

  • X (required): The lower limit for integrating ERFC.

Return value

The ERFC function returns a numeric value.

Function notes

  1. The ERFC function has been improved in Excel 2010 so that it can calculate negative values.
In Excel 2007, the ERFC function only accepts positive values. If the supplied argument is a negative value, the ERFC function will return the #NUM! error value.
  2. The #VALUE! error value occurs if the supplied x argument is non-numeric.
  3. The #VALUE! error value occurs if the supplied x argument is non-numeric.
  4. The ERFC function always returns a positive result in the range 0 to 2, regardless of whether the supplied argument is positive or negative.
  5. The equation of the complementary Error function is:

    erfc function 2

To calculate the complementary Error function integrated between a lower limit provided in the table below and infinite, please do as follows.

1. Please copy the formula below into cell D6, then press the Enter key to get the result.

=ERFC (B6)

2. Select this result cell and drag its autofill handle down to get the rest of the results.

erfc function 3

  1. When the only argument x is zero (0), ERFC returns 1 as the result.
  2. The argument in each of the above formulas is supplied as a cell reference containing a numeric value.
  3. We can also directly input a value in the formula. For example, the formula in cell D6 can be changed to:

    =ERFC (-1)

Relative Functions:

  • Excel EVEN Function
The EVEN function rounds numbers away from zero to the nearest even integer.

  • Excel EXP Function
The EXP function returns the result of the constant e raised to the nth power.
