The Excel HEX2BIN function converts a hexadecimal number to a binary number.

Syntax and arguments

Formula syntax

HEX2BIN(number, [places])

  • Number: Required, the hexadecimal number that needed to be converted to a binary number. The number cannot contain more than 10 characters (40 bits). The first bit of the number indicates if the number is positive or negative, and the remaining bits indicate the magnitude of the number. Negative numbers are represented using two’s-complement notation.
  • Places: Optional, the number that specifies the number of characters of the result. If it is greater than the minimum, the binary number will be padded out using leading zeros, such as HEX2BIN (1,2) returns 01. If it is omitted, HEX2BIN used the minimum number of characters necessary, such as HEX2BIN(1) returns 1. If the argument number is negative, the places value will be ignored, and returns a 10-character binary number. If argument places is a decimal number, it will be truncated to an integer.

Return Value

The HEX2BIN function returns to a binary number.

1. Return #NUM! error if one of below states occurs:
