Excel MODE.MULT Function

The MODE.MULT function returns a vertical array of the most frequently occurring numbers in a set of numbers.

mode.mult function 1

=MODE.MULT (number1, [number2], ...)

  • Number1 (required): The first number, cell reference, or range.
  • Number2, ... (optional): The subsequent numbers, cell references, or ranges.

Return value

The MODE.MULT function returns a numeric value.

Function notes

  1. The MODE.MULT function returns an array of results and must be entered as an array formula. Dynamic array formulas are available in Excel 365, Excel 2021, and Excel for the web, meaning no need to press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to make the formula dynamic. For users of Excel 2019 and earlier, remember to enter the formula via CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER so the multiple results can be returned in an array.
  2. Arguments in the MODE.MULT function can be supplied as numbers or names, arrays, or references that contain numbers. Up to 255 arguments are allowed.
  3. MODE.MULT function ignores empty cells or cells that contain text or Logical values.
  4. Cells with value zero will be included in the calculation.
  5. The #N/A error occurs if the data set contains no repetitive numbers.
  6. The #VALUE! error value occurs if any of the supplied arguments you typed directly in the function are non-numeric, or all the supplied arguments as ranges or cell references are text.
  7. In Excel 2010, the MODE.MULT was introduced to improve accuracy and better reflect its usage. It is unavailable in earlier versions.

To get an array of the most frequently occurring numbers from the numbers provided in the below table, please select the range of cells for placing the results (says E6:E7 in this case), copy the formula below into the first cell E6 and press the Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys to get the results.

mode.mult function 2

  1. If you are using Microsoft Excel 365, Excel 2021, and Excel for the web, typing the formula above directly in a cell and pressing the Enter key will give you an array of all results immediately.
  2. The argument in the above formula is supplied as a range that contains multiple values.
  3. We can directly input values in the arguments of the formula. The formula above can be changed to:

    =MODE.MULT (80, 60, 70, 80, 60, 90)

  4. We can also use cell references as arguments of the formula. The formula above can be changed to:

    =MODE.MULT (C5, C6, C7, C8, C9, C10)

  5. Unlike the MODE.SNGL function and MODE function returns only one number, the MODE.MULT function returns an array of multiple numbers of the same mostly occurring frequency.
