When I give my tabs coloured backgrounds (in Word 2016) those colours used to appear again every time I restarted that document.
Now they only last as long as the document is active! CLose a document and open it again, and the tab background reverts to default.
Anyone any idea what I can do?

Can you please try to disable all the other add-ins in your Excel add-ins manager?
And then please try to check whether this issue persists.
