In Word, you can easily know how many words in a document, but there are no built-in functions to help you count the number of words in a cell or a range. Kutools for Excel’s Count total words formula can quickly count the total number of words in a single cell or a range for you in Excel.

Supposing you have a cell which contains some words as below screenshot shown, and now you need to count the number of words in this cell.
1. Select a cell to place the result, and then click Kutools > Formula Helper > Formula Helper.
2. In the Formulas Helper dialog box, please do as follows.
- In the Choose a formula box, find and select Count total words;
Tips: You can check the Filter box, enter certain word into the text box to filter the formula quickly. - In the Range box, select the cell in which you want to count total words;
- Click OK. See screenshot:
Then the result is populated in selected cell immediately and the corresponding formula is created automatically.
Count number of words in a range
If you want to count the total number of words in a range, you also can apply Kutools for Excel’s Count total words formula as follows:
1. Select a cell to place the result, and then click Kutools > Formula Helper > Formula Helper.
2. In the Formula Helper dialog box, please configure as follows.
- In the Choose a formula box, find and select Count total words;
Tips: You can check the Filter box, enter certain word into the text box to filter the formula quickly. - In the Range box, select the range in which you want to count total words;
- Click OK. See screenshot:
Then the result is shown as belows. And the corresponding formula is created automatically.
Notes:
1. This feature does not work on merged cells.
2. If you like this Formula Helper, you can click the Share icon 
in the Formulas Helper dialog to share it with your friend via email or share to social medias such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Weibo.
