Show full cell content and enhance editing in Excel
AuthorSun•Last modified
When working in Excel, you may often encounter situations where cell contents are not fully visible. Long text may be truncated, or cells may display as “###” when the content exceeds the column width. This makes it difficult to quickly view or understand the data.
Although Excel provides a formula bar to display cell contents, it often offers only limited space for viewing or editing. When a cell contains long text, complex formulas, or multiple lines of content, the formula bar may not display everything clearly, making it inconvenient to review or modify the data. Even if you expand the formula bar, it may still not provide enough space for comfortable editing.
To solve this limitation, Kutools for Excel provides a practical tool called Big Formula Bar. This feature opens a larger and more flexible editing window where you can view the full contents or formulas of the active cell and edit them more conveniently. It is especially useful when dealing with long formulas, lengthy text entries, or complex worksheet data.
Advantages of Big Formula Bar
Before learning how to use the tool, it is helpful to understand why the Big Formula Bar can significantly improve your Excel editing experience.
Enable the Big Formula Bar Feature
To start using the Big Formula Bar, you first need to enable the feature in Kutools for Excel.
After installing Kutools for Excel, click Kutools > View > Big Formula Bar to activate the tool.

Once enabled, the Big Formula Bar window will appear when you select a cell. The window automatically displays the content or formula of the currently active cell, allowing you to view and edit the data more easily than using Excel's default formula bar.

This window works dynamically with the worksheet, meaning it updates automatically whenever you select a different cell.
View and Edit Cell Content or Formulas in the Big Formula Bar
One of the main advantages of the Big Formula Bar is that it allows you to both view the complete contents of a cell and edit them directly in a larger, more convenient workspace.
View the cell content or formula
By default, when you select a cell, the Big Formula Bar automatically shows the full cell value in its editing area. If the cell contains formula, the editing area will display the formula instead of the cell value.

Edit the cell content or formula
In addition to viewing the content, you can edit the cell directly within the Big Formula Bar window.
Simply place your cursor in the editing box and modify the text or formula as needed. Any changes you make will immediately update the corresponding cell in the worksheet.

Other Toolbar Options in Big Formula Bar
The Big Formula Bar also includes several useful options that help you customize how the tool works and improve your editing workflow.
Specify the Range Where Big Formula Bar Works
By default, the Big Formula Bar appears for every cell. If you do not want the Big Formula Bar to appear for every cell, you can specify a range where the feature will be active.
- In the Big Formula Bar window, click the Specified range of action button.

- In the Kutools for Excel dialog box, check the Specified Range and choose the cells where the Big Formula Bar should appear. Then choose the working scope of the tool. See screenshot below:

This flexibility allows you to control exactly where the Big Formula Bar is used. When cells outside this range are selected, the window will not pop up.
Set the Font Size of the Big Formula Bar
For better readability, the Big Formula Bar allows you to adjust the font size used in the editing window.
Click the
button in the Big Formula Bar and choose a font size as you need.

Customizing the font size ensures that formulas and text remain comfortable to read during long editing sessions.
Do Not Display Cell Formulas
By default, the Big Formula Bar displays either the cell value or the formula of the active cell. The Display the formula of the cell icon is enabled, appearing highlighted (pressed down), which indicates that formulas are currently being shown. See screenshot:

If you do not want to display formulas and prefer to show only the cell values, simply click the Display the formula of the cell icon to disable it. Once disabled, the icon will no longer be highlighted, and the Big Formula Bar will display only the cell content instead of the formula.

Pin the Big Formula Bar Window
By default, the Big Formula Bar may move together with the selected cell. However, if you want the window to stay in a fixed position, you can use the Pin option.
Simply click the Pin icon in the Big Formula Bar. When activated, the icon appears highlighted, indicating that it has been pressed and the window is fixed in place.

When the window is pinned, it remains in the same location regardless of which cell you select. This prevents the editing window from shifting around the worksheet and allows you to maintain a consistent working layout.
Minimize or Move the Big Formula Bar
If you temporarily do not need the Big Formula Bar, you can minimize it to save screen space while keeping quick access to the feature.
Simply click the Close button, and the Big Formula Bar window will be minimized to a floating icon. This allows you to keep the tool available without occupying your workspace. Whenever needed, you can click the floating icon to reopen the Big Formula Bar instantly.

In addition, you can freely move the Big Formula Bar window or the floating icon by dragging it to any position on the screen. If needed, you can double-click it to restore it to its default position.
Useful shortcuts
The Big Formula Bar supports several keyboard shortcuts that make editing faster and more efficient.
| Shortcut | Function |
| Enter | Move to the next cell |
| Ctrl + Z | Undo the last operation |
| Alt + Enter | Insert a line break within the cell |
Conclusion
The Big Formula Bar in Kutools for Excel is a powerful enhancement to Excel’s default editing interface. By providing a larger editing window, customizable font size, flexible positioning options, and convenient shortcuts, it greatly improves the experience of viewing and editing long cell contents or complex formulas.
Whether you are working with lengthy text entries, reviewing complicated formulas, or managing large datasets, the Big Formula Bar makes it much easier to read, edit, and organize your worksheet data. With its intuitive design and flexible controls, this feature helps streamline your Excel workflow and significantly increases editing efficiency.
