Quickly highlight cells with hidden formulas in Excel
When working with important formulas in Excel, you may choose to hide some formulas from the Formula Bar, especially when the worksheet is shared, protected, or used as a report template. After the formula cells are formatted as hidden and the worksheet is protected, the formulas are no longer displayed in the Formula Bar, helping protect your calculation logic from being viewed or edited.
However, once formulas are hidden, it can be difficult to identify which cells contain hidden formulas, especially in a large worksheet with many rows, columns, and calculation areas. The Highlight Hidden utility of Kutools for Excel helps you quickly highlight all cells that contain hidden formulas, so you can review, check, or manage them more easily.
Key benefits of Highlight Hidden
The Highlight Hidden feature helps you locate hidden formula cells visually, without opening cell formatting settings one by one.
- 🔍 Quickly find hidden formula cells: Highlight all cells that contain hidden formulas in just a few clicks.
- ⏱️ Save time in large worksheets: Avoid manually checking formulas across many rows and columns.
- 🛡️ Improve formula protection review: Easily confirm whether important formulas have been hidden before sharing a worksheet.
- 📊 Make hidden formulas easier to audit: Clearly see where protected calculation logic is stored.
- ✅ Reduce the risk of missed cells: Useful when formula cells are scattered across different areas of the worksheet.
- 🎨 Customize the highlight color: Choose a highlight color that is easy to recognize in your workbook.

Once the hidden formula cells are highlighted, you can review whether the correct formula cells have been hidden, check if any formula areas were missed, or continue editing the worksheet as needed.
Customize the highlight color
If the default highlight color is not clear enough in your worksheet, you can change it from the Design Tools settings. This is helpful when your workbook already uses similar colors for formatting, conditional formatting, or manual highlights.
1. Click Kutools Plus > Design View to enable the Kutools Design tab.
2. On the Kutools Design tab, click Settings.
3. In the Design Tools Settings dialog box, choose your preferred color from the Formulas Hidden Range Color drop-down list.

After changing the setting, hidden formula cells will be highlighted with the selected color when you use Highlight Hidden.
Tips and notes
- The highlight is only for visual checking: It helps you identify hidden formula cells quickly, but it does not change the formula, cell value, or actual protection setting.
- The highlight depends on Design View: If you close Design View, the highlight color will disappear.
- No hidden formula cells found: If the current worksheet does not contain any cell ranges with hidden formulas, Kutools will display a reminder, such as “There are no cell ranges with hidden formulas in the current worksheet.”

- Newly added hidden formula ranges can be highlighted automatically: Once the feature is enabled, any newly added ranges with hidden formulas will be highlighted automatically.
- Highlighted cells outside the visible area: If the highlighted hidden formula cells are not currently visible on the screen, Kutools helps scroll the highlighted range into view, so you can locate and review the result more easily.
- You can customize the highlight color: Click Settings on the Kutools Design tab, and then choose a color from the Formulas Hidden Range Color drop-down list.
- You can hide formulas first: If you need to hide formulas in selected cells, you can use the Formulas Hide utility of Kutools for Excel.
- Worksheet protection is required: In Excel, setting a cell as hidden does not hide the formula until the worksheet is protected.
- Use it before sharing a workbook: Before sending a protected worksheet to others, use Highlight Hidden to confirm that important formula cells have been hidden correctly.
