Normally you can quite easy to format a character as superscript or subscript in Excel, but if you want to separately format different characters of a cell as superscript or subscript in Excel, you may need to repeat Format Cells function step by step. That’s a really time-consuming job. In this case, the Superscript / Subscript tool of Kutools for Excel can eventually save your time by bringing the following benefits in Excel:

Click Kutools >> Format >> Superscript / Subscript. See screenshot:
Format text or characters as superscript in a cell
1. Select the cell that you want to format the characters as superscript.
2. Go to the Superscript / Subscript Formatting dialog box, all the contents of the cell will be displayed in the dialog box. The default state of the characters is normal.
3. Click one character that you want to format as superscript, and check Superscript option, you can apply the formatting attributes (Bold, Italic, font size and case) for the character as well. See screenshot:
4. After formatting one character, repeat step2, you can continue to format other characters that you need.
5. And then click OK, the characters that you specified have been formatted as superscript. See screenshots:

Format text or characters as subscript in a cell
With this utility, you can also format the text as subscript in Excel.
1. Select the cell that you want to format the characters as subscript.
2. Go to the Superscript / Subscript Formatting dialog box, all the contents of the cell will be displayed in the dialog box. The default state of the characters is normal.
3. Click one character that you want to format as subscript, and check Subscript option, you can apply the formatting attributes (Bold, Italic, font size and case) for the character as well. See screenshot:
4. After formatting one character, repeat step2, you can continue to format other characters that you need.
5. And then click OK, the characters that you specified have been formatted as subscript. See screenshots:

Notes:
1. This operation supports one level undo, so you can press Undo (Ctrl+z) to immediately restore the effect.
2. Only the alpha characters can be toggled the case attribute.
3. If In-cell preview option is checked, you can see the effect immediately without clicking OK. It will save your time from repeating modification.
4. If the selected cell contains a formula, this operation cannot be used.
5. If the selected cell contains a value, you will be asked if you want to convert the value to text. If you reply “Yes”, a single apostrophe will be inserted as a prefix and the cell will no longer function as a numeric value.
