In some circumstances, you may need to split a document into multiple documents by headings, page break, section break or page in Word. But there is no built-in option for you to quickly split document in Word. Kutools for Word’s Split Document utility can quickly split documents into multiple documents by headings, page break, section break or page in Word.

Split a document into multiple documents by headings, section break, page break or page

If you want to split a document into multiple documents by headings, section break, page break or page, you can quickly get it done as follows:

1. Please open your document, and then apply this utility by clicking Kutools Plus > Split.

2. Please specify the settings in the Split Document dialog box. Tip: If you choose to split the document by heading 1, it will split the document in each heading 1 into a new document. If you choose to split the document by page, it will split each page of the document as a new document.

A: Please choose to split the document by heading 1, page break, section break, or page.

B: Please specify a folder to save the documents after splitting.

C: Please type prefix for each document name as you need.

3. Click OK button to begin splitting.

2. In the Split Document dialog, please configure as follows:

(4) In the Document Prefix box, type prefix for each document name as you need.

Now each n pages (each 4 pages in my case) is saved a separated document.

Split a Word document into multiple ones by custom page ranges

In some cases, you may want to split a Word document by custom page ranges, says save page 1-2, page 3-10, page 11-15, and page 16 as 4 individual documents separately. Here, you can apply the Split Document feature to solve this problem.

1. Please open your Word document you will split, and click Kutools Plus > Split.

2. In the Split Document dialog, please configure as follows:
(1) Choose Custom from the Split by drop down list;
(2) In the Page box, please type the custom page ranges as you need, and separate these page ranges with comma. In my case, I will type 1-2,3-10,11-15,16 in the Page box;
(3) In the Save to box, please select the destination folder you will save the new documents into;
(4) In the Document Prefix box, type prefix for each document name as you need.

    I need to batch split a folder with about 3,000 Word files. I found this website that says it offers this functionality (https://www.lantechsoft.com/word-document-splitter.html), but I'm leery about using it because the website has a bunch of misspellings, and I'm not comfortable entering my credit card on their website to buy their product. Can ExtendOffice do what I need or do you have to open one document at a time?

    I tried to use the split function but got this message:
Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.

    The given path's format is not supported.
(details are too long to post here). Nothing I do works.

    HI All, when I split my documents it adds a blank page at the start of each document. When I try and remove this it removes all the formatting of the actual document. How can I get round this?

    Hi. First off, KUTOOLS is an excellent product. I am running into any issue when I split a document by "heading 1." Word keeps asking me if I want to save changes. This means I have to monitor the process for the dialogue box. Any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening?

    Evaluating Product prior to testing. Using Windows from Office 365. Split by page loses the table in the document. Split by Section Break loses the table in the document. Why does it remove content? Is this a known issue?

      No. :-) You will have a new Webpage index. You should go to download and have a free trial of the feature.

    Why can't I split the large document by every 4th page? Is this only possible to do by every page?
    I mean: I have a 4000 page document. I want to split it into 4 documents, 1000 pages each. How do I do that?

      Hello, the feature cannot split each 4 pages as one document right now. We may consider to enhance it in upcoming versions. :-)

        I would consider buying it then. I really need that functionality. I'm tired of having to go through with VBA every time I have a different raport that I have to split into thousand different parts.

    I have split up a very long document by Headers, but it has not been saved by the original sequence. It saved it alphabetically and It has 40+ chapters and now I should go back and put them in order to create a master document, which was why I needed to split it up in the first place.

    I can't see any way to tell the program to save the files in the original sequence. I could go back and add 1,2,3 to the beginning of the Headers, but it is a lot of work and when I am done with editing, I would have to remove the numbers again.

    Is there a way to split up a very large document without changing the sequence of the chapters/headers? Thank you

    I have large mailmerged documents that I would like to split into areas, for example, where code *CMA* becomes *CMB*. Or when *endofarea* is printed. I can't see any way of doing this. Is there one or could you add it to Kutools please?

      :-) Hello, we don't have such feature right now. We may try to enhance it in the future.
