This does not work when I try to preserve cell text alignment. For example, I want the text to be left aligned in a particular column. Upon refresh, the format resets.
Note for anyone offering to debug (if any kind soul is brave enough) - I often have multiple fields in the column section.

Worthless guide. The "preserve formatting on update" setting does literally nothing.

OK - I just found a solution. Use conditional formatting of the column.

I selected all my date columns; RIBBON - Conditional Formatting. Condition is any date greater than 1/1/1900; Selected the date format I want to use; Tested changes to the pivot data, refreshed and the formatting was preserved.

I've tried this several times and it does not work for me. What version are you using? I am using MS Office 2016. I've been trying to manage dates as short date format. Very frustrating to have to select date columns and reformat every time the data is refreshed so that the TIME doesn't display.

"Sometimes, you may remove the check mark of the Preserve cell formatting on update ... Today, I will talk about an easy trick to deal with this task" - what, you mean like, re-checking the box? Not exactly earth-shattering news...

I'm using Excel 2013 and Preserve Formatting isn't working. The spreadsheet I am using was originally generated in Excel 2007.
