How to prevent chart / picture / button from moving in Excel?

Author: Xiaoyang Last Modified: 2014-06-11

In Excel, we always insert some objects, such as charts, pictures or buttons and so on to make the worksheet more vividly and clearly. But, when you drag the cells below these objects, the floating objects will be moving or resizing with the cells automatically. How could you prevent these objects from resizing or moving in Excel?

If you have Excel 2010/2007, you can solve this job with following steps:

1. Select your specific object which you want to prevent from resizing or moving, and click Format in the ribbon, then click doc-stop-chart-moving2 button in the Size group, see screenshot:

2. In the popped out dialog:

(1.) In Excel 2010, choose Properties option from the left pane, and then check Don’t move or size with cells, see screenshot:

(2.) In Excel 2007, click Properties tab, and select Don’t move or size with cells option.

3. Then click Close button, and when you drag the cells next time, the objects will not be moving or resizing any more.

There is a little differences in setting the properties in Excel 2013 from Excel 2007/2010, please do as this:

1. Select your specific object which you want to prevent from resizing or moving, and click Format in the ribbon, then click doc-stop-chart-moving2 button in the Size group, see screenshot:

2. In the popped out pane, click Size & Properties icon, and check Don’t move or size with cells option under PROPERTIES section, see screenshot:

3. After changing the setting, then close the pane.

How to prevent the object from getting dragged, while still allowing to activate?

"Don't move or size with cells" DOESN'T prevent user from dragging the object around. It only prevents the object from moving if rows or columns are resized, or if cells are moved around. The only way to prevent the object from getting dragged is to lock it, and then protect the worksheet (but then you can't activate the object).

Any way to do this with a Pivot table?

This worked in Office 2010, but I am now using Office 365. Excel is totally disregarding the "Don't move or resize ..." selection. When a spreadsheet is opened, graphics are stretching to what appears to be random aspect ratios no matter that "Don't move or resize ..." AND "Lock aspect ratio" are BOTH checked. I am using the latest version of Windows 10 and the latest version of Office 365 as of August 2016. This bug is killing me. I am going to be forced back to Office 2007.

Has this been solved? Am trying to move graphics as I sort the data. graphics are well within the cell size. move and don't resize checked.

Yes. This is exactly an issue only in Office 365. The only work around that i have noticed is to copy the entire printable content page by page into Word file and from that i have printed as PDF and it worked but really tedious if we have to work with multiple pages. Microsoft should fix this bug at the earliest.

I am having this same issue, and it's a real pain, as I need a tree map for a daily report and don't want to constantly readjust each day before publishing.

Regardless of the settings, once you use print preview, the objects constantly move and resize on the worksheet in Excel 2010.
