Excel SIGN Function
The SIGN function returns the sign of a number. If a number is positive, SIGN returns 1. If a number is negative, sign returns -1. If a number is zero, SIGN returns 0.
Syntax
=SIGN(number)
Arguments
- number (required): The number to return the sign for.
Return Value
The SIGN function returns 1, -1 or 0.
Function Notes
- SIGN will return the #VALUE! error if number is not numeric.
Example
Supposing you have a table with numbers as shown below, to get the sign of the first number, please copy or enter the formula below in cell C4, and press Enter to get the result:
=SIGN(5)
√ Note: In the formula above, we used the actual values. However, in the case that you want to get the signs of all the numbers in the table as shown below, cell references are better choices than the actual values. Since you can just drag the fill handle down to apply the formula to the below cells after entering the formula with cell references in the top cell. The formula with a cell reference is as followed:
=SIGN(B4)
