How to disable and change AutoSave location in Excel?

You may notice Microsoft Excel can automatically save copies of working workbook within certain saving intervals. But do you know how to disable the AutoSave in Excel? And what if changing the AutoSave location/folder in Excel? This article shows you ways to solve these problems.

Disable the AutoSave in Excel

By default the AutoSave is enabled in Excel. To disable the AutoSave, you can do as follows:

Step 1: Click the File > Options.

Note: In Excel 2007, you can click the Office button > Excel Options.

Step 2: In the Excel Options dialog box, click the Save in the left bar, and then uncheck the Save AutoRecover information every x minutes box in the Save Workbooks section. See screen shot:

Step 3: Click the OK button.

From now on, Microsoft Excel won't automatically save copies of working workbooks.

Temporarily backup (take a snapshot of) current workbook with one click

When undoing some operations in Excel, generally you may click the Undo button repeatedly. However, this Undo feature is frequently unable to revoke operations by VBA code. Here we recommend Kutools for Excel's Track Snap utility, which can help you temporally backup current workbook with only one click and recover your workbook to any backup versions with also only one click in Excel.

These temporary backup versions will be removed automatically after closing the current workbook.

Change AutoSave location in Excel

Normally the AutoRecover workbooks are saved in the default auto saving folder: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\. Sometimes, you may find it is a little difficult to find out the AutoSave location quickly. Actually you can change the AutoSave location, and make you find out AutoRecover workbooks much easier in Excel.

Step 1: Click the File > Options ( In Excel 2007, click the Office button > Excel Options).

Step 2: In the Excel Options dialog box, click the Save in left bar, and:
(1) In the Save Workbooks section, keep checking the option of Save AutoRecover information every x minutes;
(2) In the AutoRecover file location box, remove original saving path, and then enter your new AutoSave location into it.

Step 3: Click the OK button.

Then all copies of working workbooks will be automatically saved into the new location within specific saving interval.

There is a difference between autosave and autorecover. Autosave actually saves the changes you make to the same file. Autorecover creates a copy which you can recover, but does not replace the original file. Turning off AutoSave cant be done using these instructions.
