How to count the number of occurrences of a word in a column in Excel?
If you have a column data which includes some duplicate values as below screenshot shown, and now what you want to do is to count the number of the occurrences of a specific word in this column. Now with this tutorial, I introduce some tricks to solve it quickly in Excel.

Count the number of occurrences of a word in a column with formulas
In Excel, I can tell you some simple formulas to quickly count the occurrences of a word in a column.
Select a cell next to the list you want to count the occurrence of a word, and then type this formula =COUNTIF(A2:A12,"Judy") into it, then press Enter, and you can get the number of appearances of this word.

Note:
1. You also can use this formula =SUM(IF(A2:A12="Judy",1,0)) to get the counting result, with this formula, you need to press Shift + Ctrl + Enter keys simultaneously to return the result.
2. In above two formulas, A2:A12 is the list range you want to count the specific word from, and “Judy” is the word you want to count its number of occurrences.
Count the number of occurrences of a word in a column with Kutools for Excel
If you have Kutools for Excel, you can use its Select Specific Cells utility to not only quickly count out the number of appearances of a specific word, but also select all of these duplicates.

After free installing Kutools for Excel, please do as below:
1. Select the list you want to count the word from, and click Kutools > Select > Select Specific Cells. See screenshot:
2. Then in the popped out dialog, check Cell option under Selection type section, then go to select Equals from the list under Specific type section, and type the word you want to find in the beside textbox. See screenshot:
3. Click Ok, and another dialog pops out to remind you the number of selected cells (that is the number of the occurrences of the specified word), and at the same time, all of this word in the list are selected. See screenshot:
4. Click OK to close the dialogs, and the words are also selected, and you can view the counting of these words in the status bar, too.
With Kutools for Excel’s Select Specific Cells, you can select cells based on multiple criteria.
Count the number of occurrences of a word in a single cell with Kutools for Excel
If you want to count the number of occurrences of a word in a single cell as below screenshot shown, you can use Kutools for Excel’s Count times a word appears utility to quickly count out the number of occurrences of a word from a single cell.
After free installing Kutools for Excel, please do as below:
1. Select a cell that will get the counting result, and then click Kutools > Formula Helper > Statistical > Count the number of a word. See screenshot:
2. Then in the Formulas Helper dialog, do as below:
1) Select the cell you want to count the word from to the Text textbox;
2) Type the word you want to count its number of occurrences into the Word textbox. See screenshot:
3. Click Ok. Now the counting result is displayed in the selected cell.
