Excel Formula: Check if cell contains number
Sometimes, you may want to check if a cell contains numeric characters. This tutorial provides a formula which will return TRUE if the cell contains number, FALSE if cell does not contain number as below screenshot shown, and also explains how this formula work in Excel.
Generic formula:
=COUNT(FIND({0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9},text))>0 |
Arguments
Text: the cell reference or text string you want to check if contains number. |
Return value:
This formula returns logical value, FALSE: the cell does not contain number; TRUE:the cell contains number.
How this formula work
For instance, you want to check if the cell B3 contains number, please use below formula
=COUNT(FIND({0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9},B3))>0 |
Press Enter key to check if cell B3 contains number.
Explanation
FIND function: the FIND function will return the position of a character or text string in a cell. Here the FIND({0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9},B3) find the position of numbers in cell B3, which returns the array result {#VALUE!;16; #VALUE!;#VALUE!;#VALUE!;#VALUE!; #VALUE!;#VALUE!; #VALUE!}.
COUNT function: the COUNT function counts the matched values in a databased. Here the =COUNT(FIND({0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9},B3)) only counts the numbers, in other words, a numeric value is treated as 1, and #VALUE! as 0.
Lastly, compare the result of formula COUNT(FIND({0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9},B3)) and zero, if the result of formula COUNT(FIND({0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9},B3)) is greater than 0, then returns TRUE, or returns FALSE.
