Excel T.INV.2T Function

The T.INV.2T function returns the inverse of Student's two-tailed t-distribution. The t-distribution is frequently used in testing hypotheses on small sample data sets.

Note: The T.INV.2T function was introduced in Excel 2010. So, it is not available in earlier versions of Excel.

t.inv function 1

Syntax

=T.INV.2T(probability, deg_freedom)

Arguments

  • probability (required): The probability for which you want to evaluate the inverse of the two-tailed Student's T Distribution. Note: probability must be between 0 and 1.
  • deg_freedom (required): An integer indicating the number of degrees of freedom. Note: deg_freedom must be ≥ 1.

Return Value

The T.INV.2T function returns a numeric value.

Function Notes

  • If deg_freedom is not an integer, it will be truncated.
  • T.INV.2T returns the #VALUE! error if probability or deg_freedom is non-numeric.
  • T.INV.2T returns the #NUM! error if:
    • probability ≤ 0 or probability > 1;
    • deg_freedom < 1.

Example

To calculate the two-tailed inverse of the Student's t distribution with a probability of 68% and 2 degrees of freedom, please copy or enter the formula below in the result cell, and press Enter to get the result.

=T.INV.2T(B7,B10)

t.inv function 2

Also, you can type the actual probability and deg_freedom values in the formula as shown below.

=T.INV.2T(0.68,2)
