How to convert a vertical list to horizontal or vice versa in Excel
You may sometimes need to convert a vertical list into a horizontal row, or a horizontal list into a vertical column, to fit a different worksheet layout. This article introduces two ways to switch the orientation of a list in Excel.

Convert a vertical list to horizontal or vice versa with Paste Special
Excel's Paste Special feature can convert a vertical list into a horizontal row or a horizontal list into a vertical column.
- Select the vertical or horizontal list you want to convert, and press Ctrl + C to copy it.
- Select a blank cell where you want to place the converted list.
- Click Home > Paste > Paste Special.
- In the Paste Special dialog box, select the Transpose checkbox, and click OK.
The selected vertical or horizontal list is converted immediately.

The converted list is a separate copy and does not update automatically when the original list changes.
Convert a vertical list to horizontal or vice versa with Kutools for Excel
For more layout options, the Transform Range feature of Kutools for Excel can convert a vertical list into a horizontal row, a horizontal list into a vertical column, or a single row or column into a multi-row and multi-column range.
- Click Kutools > Range > Transform Range.
- In the Transform Range dialog box, select the vertical list in the Data to be transformed box, choose Range to single row, and click OK.
- In the next Transform Range dialog box, select a blank cell where you want to place the converted list, and click OK.

To convert a horizontal list into a vertical column, select the horizontal list and choose Range to single column in the Transform Range dialog box.
The selected list is converted successfully.

Frequently asked questions
Does the converted list stay linked to the original list?
No. Both methods create a separate result, so later changes to the original list are not reflected automatically.
Can Paste Special transpose formulas?
Yes. However, relative cell references may change according to the new positions. Check the formulas after transposing to ensure they still reference the intended cells.
Why is the Transpose option unavailable?
Make sure you copied the source list instead of cutting it. Merged cells in the source or destination can also prevent the list from being transposed.
Will transposing overwrite existing data?
It can. Make sure the entire destination area is empty or contains data you no longer need before placing the converted list.
Why is Kutools not showing in my Excel ribbon?
Kutools for Excel must be installed and enabled before its tabs appear. If it is already installed, check whether it has been disabled under File > Options > Add-ins.
