How to countif something is in selected cells in Excel?

In many cases, you may need to count if something is in selected cells, such as counting total numbers of all nonblank cells, or counting cells with specific text only. In this article, we will show you methods to solve these problems.

Countif all nonblank cells are in selected cells with formula

You can use the following formula to count all nonblank cells in selected range in Excel. Please do as follows.

1. Select a blank cell for locating the result, enter formula =COUNTA(A1:E7) into the Formula Bar, and then press the Enter key. See screenshot:

Note: A1:E7 is the range with nonblank cells you need to count. Please change it as you need.

Then you are getting the total number of all nonblank cells in specified range.


Countif all nonblank cells are in selected cells with Kutools for Excel

If you want to count the total number of all nonblank cells as well as select them after counting, the Select Nonblank Cells utility of Kutools for Excel can help you.

Before applying Kutools for Excel, please download and install it firstly.

1. Select the range with the nonblank cells you want to count and select, then click Kutools > Select > Select Nonblank Cells. See screenshot:

2. Then a Kutools for Excel dialog box pops up and shows you how many nonblank cells are in selected range, click the OK button to close it, then all nonblank cells are selected immediately.

Countif specific text is in selected cells with formula

If you just want to count cells with specific text or number in selected range, please apply the following formula.

1. As below screenshot shown, for counting cells which contain Apple in the Fruit column, please select a blank cell, enter formula =COUNTIF(A2:C12,"Apple") into the formula bar, and then press the Enter key to get the result.

Note:

1. In the formula, A2:C12 is the range you will count the specific text inside, and Apple is the specific text you will count.


Countif specific text is in selected cell with Kutools for Excel

The Select Specific Cells utility of Kutools for Excel can not only help you count cells with specific text, but also select them after counting. You can do as follows.

Before applying Kutools for Excel, please download and install it firstly.

1. Select the range with specific text cells you need to count, then click Kutools > Select > Select Specific Cells. See screenshot:

2. In the Select Specific Cells dialog box, select the Cell or Entire row option in the Selection type section, and select Equals or Contains option in the first Specific type drop-down list, enter the specific text into the text box, then click the OK button. See screenshot:

3. Then a dialog box pops up and tells you the total number of specific text cells, please click the OK button to close it. Then the specific cells are selected immediately in the specified range.
