How to delete tracer arrows in Excel?
In Excel, tracer arrows are a helpful visual tool that allow you to clearly see the connections and relationships between cells, such as which formulas reference which cells. These arrows can be especially useful when troubleshooting complex spreadsheets or auditing formulas for accuracy. For example, you might use tracer arrows to trace the precedents and dependents of a cell, as shown in the screenshot below:

However, there are situations where tracer arrows can become a hindrance rather than a help. If you have a densely populated worksheet, the arrows may overlap with your data or formatting, making the sheet appear cluttered and harder to read. In such cases, knowing how to remove these arrows can help restore clarity and make your worksheet easier to work with.
There are a couple of ways to delete tracer arrows depending on your needs—for instance, you may want to remove just a specific type of arrow, or you might need to clear all arrows across your worksheet. Below is a step-by-step guide to both options, along with tips and practical scenarios where each approach is appropriate.
Excel formula methods for tracing relationships
Delete tracer arrows
If you want to remove tracer arrows that are currently displayed in your sheet, here’s how you can do it:
Select the cell that contains tracer arrows. Then, navigate to the Formulas tab in the Excel ribbon. Look for the Remove Arrows button, which contains a dropdown arrow. Click the small arrow next to it to display a list of arrow types to remove. This allows you to target either 'Remove Precedent Arrows', 'Remove Dependent Arrows', or all types at once, depending on what is cluttering your view. See screenshot for reference:

Once you pick the appropriate option, Excel will immediately delete the selected tracer arrows from your worksheet. This is useful if you want to keep certain arrow types visible (for example, just precedents or dependents) while removing others for a clearer view.

Tip: If your goal is to remove all arrows at once regardless of type, you don’t need to use the dropdown arrow. Simply click the main Remove Arrows button itself on the Formulas tab. This will instantly clear every tracer arrow from your current worksheet, providing a quick solution for decluttering when you have multiple arrow types displayed.

Note: When you use Remove Arrows as described above, Excel will only delete tracer arrows from the worksheet you are currently working on. If you have multiple worksheets with tracer arrows, you'll need to repeat this process for each one as the function does not apply to the entire workbook all at once.
In practice, it is good to double-check which arrows are present before removing them, especially if you are sharing your workbook with colleagues or using the arrows for ongoing formula tracing. Accidentally removing arrows could make it harder to track issues later.
Excel formula methods for tracing relationships
While tracer arrows provide a visual way to inspect cell relationships, you can also use Excel’s formula features to track precedents and dependents. This is helpful when you want a cell-based list of related references rather than graphical arrows.
For example, to identify cells that directly reference a specific cell, use the following formula in a new cell (let’s say C1):
=IFERROR(FORMULATEXT(A1),"") Press Enter, and C1 will display the formula contained in cell A1, making it easy to spot references. You can copy this formula to other cells by selecting C1, pressing Ctrl+C, then pasting where needed.
If you want to check whether a cell contains a formula referring to another cell, in a target cell (e.g., D1), enter:
=ISFORMULA(A1) This will return TRUE if A1 contains a formula, allowing you to filter for dependent cells without needing visual arrows.
Tip: These formula-driven methods are suitable for documenting relationships in worksheet audits or when sharing reports with users who prefer lists over visual elements.
