How to split at any number in Excel?

Let’s say there is a list of data mixed with letters and numbers, now you want to split the list of data by any number, any idea? This article will introduce two ways to solve this problem.

Split at any number with Microsoft Word

This method will guide you to add commas before the number in Word, and then move and split the data in Excel. Please do as follows:

1. Copy the list of data you will split in Excel, and then paste into a new Word document.

2. Select the list in Word, Press Ctrl + H keys together to open the Find and Replace dialog box, please type ([0-9]{1,}) into the Find what box, type ,\1 into the Replace with box, and then click the More button to expand the search options. See screenshot:

3. Go ahead to check the Use wildcards option in the Search Options section, and then click the Replace All button. See screenshot:

4. Click OK buttons successively to close both Microsoft Word dialog boxes. And then close the Find and Replace dialog box.

Now commas are added before all numbers in bulk.

5. Copy the new list of data in Word, and then paste into Excel again.

6. In Excel, keep the new list of data selected, and click Data > Text to Columns. See screenshot:

7. In the Convert Text to Columns Wizard – Step 1 of 3, keep the Delimited option selected, and click the Next button. See screenshot:

8. In the Convert Text to Columns Wizard – Step 2 of 3, please check Comma option, and click the Finish button. See screenshot:

Now you will see the list of data is split at any numbers. See screenshot:


Split at any number with Kutools for Excel

If you have Kutools for Excel installed, you can apply its Add Text and Split Cells features to split cells at any number easily. Please do as follows:

1. Select the list of data you will split, and click Kutools > Text > Add Text. See screenshot:

2. In the Add Text dialog box, please type a comma in the Text box, check the Only add to option, and select 1st character is number from below drop-down list, and then click the Ok button. See screenshot:

Now commas are added before each number in bulk.

3. Keep the list of data selected, and click Kutools > Text > Split Cells. See screenshot:

4. In the Split Cells dialog box, please check the Split to Columns option, check the Other option, next type a comma in the right box, and finally click the Ok button. See screenshot:

5. In the second Split Cells dialog box, please specify the first cell of destination range, and click the OK button. See screenshot:

Now you will see the list of data is split at any numbers. See screenshot:
