Excel Formula: Convert Time to Decimal Hours

Here provides a formula that converts time to decimal hours in Excel and explains how the formula works.

The formula returns a value in time format, please format the result as general or number as you need to get the decimal hours.

How this formula work

To convert the time in cell B3 to decimal hours in cell C3, please use below formula:

Press Enter key to get a value in time format.

Click Home tab, and go to the Number Format drop-down list to choose General or Number to display the result as a number.

Explanation

There are 24 hours a day, in other words, one hour is 1/24 day. To convert the time to decimal hours, it should multiply the value 24. For example, converting time 10:00 to decimal hours:
=10:00*24
=(10/24)*24
=10
