How to Quickly Unhide Hidden Formulas in Protected Excel Sheets

AuthorZhoumandyLast modified

Hidden formulas in a protected Excel worksheet can help keep important calculations safe, but they can also make editing, auditing, or updating a template more difficult. If you need to show those formulas again, this guide introduces two easy ways to unhide hidden formulas in protected Excel sheets: one using Excel’s built-in features, and the other using Kutools for Excel for a faster and more convenient workflow.

Unhide Hidden Formulas in Protected Excel Sheets

What does “Unhide Formulas” mean in Excel?

The phrase unhide formulas can mean two different things in Excel:

  • Show formulas instead of results in worksheet cells
  • Reveal formulas that were hidden in a protected worksheet

In this article, we are focusing on the second case: how to reveal formulas that were hidden by worksheet protection.

When a formula cell is marked as Hidden and the worksheet is protected, Excel displays only the result, not the formula itself. To unhide the formula, you need to remove that hidden setting.

Method 1: Unhide formulas with Excel built-in features

If formulas were hidden using the Hidden cell setting together with worksheet protection, removing sheet protection will make those formulas visible again.

1. Open the worksheet that contains the hidden formulas.

2. Go to the Review tab, and click Unprotect Sheet.
Click Unprotect Sheet

3. If the worksheet is password protected, enter the password to continue.
Enter the password

4. If you want these formulas to remain visible the next time the worksheet is protected, select the formula cells, press Ctrl + 1 to open the Format Cells dialog box, go to the Protection tab, and then clear the Hidden checkbox.
Clear the Hidden checkbox

Result: The formulas that were previously hidden by worksheet protection become visible again, and the selected formula cells will remain visible the next time the worksheet is protected.

Why formulas stay hidden in protected sheets

In Excel, formulas do not become hidden just because a worksheet is protected. A formula is hidden only when both of the following conditions are true:

  • The formula cell is set to Hidden
  • The worksheet is protected

If the worksheet is protected but the formula cells are not marked as Hidden, users can still click the cells and see the formulas in the formula bar.

This is why simply unprotecting the worksheet may make formulas viewable again, but if you want to fully remove the hidden setting for future use, you should also clear the Hidden checkbox from those cells.

FAQs

Why can’t I see formulas in a protected Excel worksheet?

If the formula cells were set as Hidden and the worksheet was protected, Excel will display only the results, not the formulas.

Does Excel have a built-in Unhide Formulas button?

No. Excel supports this task through cell protection settings, but it does not provide a separate ribbon command called Unhide Formulas.

Can I unhide formulas without Kutools?

Yes. You can unprotect the worksheet, select the formula cells, open Format Cells, and clear the Hidden option manually.

Does unprotecting a worksheet automatically remove the hidden setting?

No. Unprotecting the worksheet stops Excel from enforcing the hidden display behavior, but the cells may still remain marked as Hidden. If you want to fully remove that setting, you should clear it in the Protection tab of Format Cells.

What is the fastest way to unhide formulas in Excel?

If you do this often, using a dedicated tool like Kutools for Excel is usually faster because it provides a direct Unhide Formulas command.
