How to convert .doc Word files to .docx format?

Older Word documents in the .doc format may need to be converted to .docx for compatibility with modern versions of Microsoft Word. Instead of manually recreating documents, you can quickly convert them using built-in Word features or the Kutools for Word add-in. This guide will show you both methods.

1. In Word 2010/2013, click File > Save As. In Word 2007, click the Office button > Save As.

   

2. In the Save As dialog, choose Word Document (*.docx) as the file type and click Save.

   

Your document is now converted to the .docx format.

Batch convert multiple .doc files to .docx with Kutools for Word

If you have Kutools for Word installed, the Doc/Docx utility allows you to convert multiple .doc files to .docx in just a few clicks.

1. Click Kutools Plus > Doc/Docx.

   

2. In the Document Format Converter window, follow these steps:
   1. Select Doc to Docx from the Format Convert drop-down menu.
   2. Click to add documents:

      Choose Files to add individual documents. Choose Folder to add all documents from a specific folder.

   3. By default, the converted files will be saved to the same location as the source files. To change the location, click the Browse button and choose a new destination.
   4. Optionally, check the Delete source files after conversion box to remove the original files after the .docx files are created.
   5. Optionally, check the Keep the modified date of original files box to retain the original file metadata.

      

3. Once all settings are complete, click Ok.
