I don't have other versions of Word, but I understand Word 2016 offers a built-in numbering method.
Easily insert a right aligned caption next to an equation in word
Word does not offer a built-in method of automatically inserting a caption flush with the right edge of a document. Here are two examples of equation caption in scientific journal:
In any case, scientific journals require the equation caption to be right aligned and on the same line with the equation. Besides, the caption number should be enclosed in parentheses. This tutorial will tell you how to easily insert a right aligned caption like this next to an equation.
Normally, we can insert a right aligned caption next to an equation with Tab. But this method is very complicated which is a little difficult for us to understand.
First of all, we should set up the caption; use these steps to create the label with parentheses:
Step 1: From the References menu, click Insert Caption; pop up the dialog box below
Step 2: Select New Label, type an opening parenthesis in the Label box. Choose OK.
Step 3: In the Caption box, type a space to the right of the number. Type a closing parenthesis then click OK to insert an equation caption
Note：After you have created the new caption format, you can insert additional captions by repeating the step3.
Secondly, we should make the caption inserted to be right aligned. You can follow the steps below.
Step 1: Move the caption to the start of the line. Set a right-aligned tab for the right margin.
Step 2: Click on the ruler, then drag the symbol to the right edge of the page
Step 3: Insert the equation before the caption. Press the TAB key to move the caption to the right edge of the page.
The method above is so complicated. Is there any easy way to insert a right aligned caption next to equation? Yes, Kutools for Word is your best choice. After you have installed Kutools for Word, you can easily insert a right aligned caption next to equation.
