Step 1: click Tools menu, and then click Options
Step 2: under View tab, check or uncheck Picture placeholders checkbox item to show or hide picture placeholders of document in Show section.

If you are using Word 2007, click Officeicon 
, and then click Word Options;
If you are using Word 2010, click Filetab 
, and then click Options.
Step 2: click Advanced located left of Option window, check or uncheck Show picture placeholders in Show document content to show or hide picture placeholders in document.
