This tutorial provides a formula for converting time to decimal seconds in Excel.

Generic formula:

Time*86400

Arguments

Time: the excel time that is used to convert to decimal seconds.

Return Value

The formula returns a value in time format, then format the result as number as you need to get the decimal seconds.

How this formula work

Supposing in cell B3, there is a time value, to convert the time to decimal seconds, please use below formula:

=B3*86400

Press Enter key to get a value in time format.

Click Home tab, and go to the Number Format drop-down list to choose General or Number to display the result as a number.

Explanation

There are 24 hours a day, and one hour is equal to 60 minutes, one minutes is 60 seconds. To convert the time to decimal seconds, you should multiply the value 24*60*60.
